Validation and Verification for Medical Devices

Validation and Verification for Medical Devices Validation and Verification for Medical Devices Validation and Verification for Medical DevicesU.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and international regulatory standards continue to evolve and become more stringent. Medical devices are also becoming smaller and more complex in design, sometimes using advanced, engineered plastics. This makes the process of validation and verification (VV) even more importantelend only to comply with regulations, but also design the highest-quality parte and production process. The result is better repeatability, fewer mistakes, less rework and redesign, faster time to market, improved competitiveness, and lower production costs. We sat down with VV expert Byron Larson, president of Toltec Ventures LLC, to discuss the latest trends in validation and verification. Toltec Ventures helps medical device companies with all aspects of VV to improve production and comply with FDAs QSR and ISOs 13485 quality- system directives. Toltec is highly experienced in developing VV strategies and protocols for software, electronic hardware, mechanical components, and system-level specifications that are essential for meeting technical, regulatory, and standards based requirements. Larson has 28 years of experience in developing and implementing VV procedures for medical device product development.Design controls in a product development process. Source FDAQ What exactly does validation and verification entail?Validation is the process of making aya that you have objective evidence that user needs and intended uses are met. It is usually done by tests, inspections, and in some cases analysis. However, the target of the validation is to make sure the user needs are met in a medical device that consistently provides the intended medical benefit in actual-use conditions. Verification is typically making sure that you have objective evidence that specified requirements are met. It is usually done by t ests, inspections, and in some cases analysis as well.Q. What are medical device companies requesting these days when it comes to validation and verification? They want effective, relevant, and well-documented VV activity that is compliant with medical-device regulations. Medical devices come in many different technologies, shapes, sizes, levels of complexity, etc. VV activity is typically driven by the regulatory environment and international standards. For example, considerable emphasis is now placed on human factors engineering. From a VV point of view, there are specialized human factors testing techniques such as formative and summative testing. Two relatively recent standardsISOs IEC 623662007 Medical DevicesApplication of Usability Engineering to Medical Devices and AAMIs ANSI/AAMI HE75 2009s Human Factors EngineeringDesign of Medical Devicesprovide guidance for the overall usability engineering process, as well as design and testing techniques. The FDA also provides a great d eal of information on this topic in the form of guidance documents.Q. What are the latest advancements in VV?VV activities are more standardized than in the past, which has streamlined overall manufacturing process and the approval process. VV is further enhanced by automated testing and powerful diagnostic and data collection tools. Medical-device companies typically follow a formal development process defined by deliverables at each step. Every specification needs evidence of verification and/or validation. So do risk control measures.Q. When is the best time to consider VV in product development?VV covers all phases of product development and many different technologies. Examples include electronics, mechanical/physical, fluids, thermal systems, electromechanical component evaluation, instrumentation, biologic aspects, etc.It is extremely important to consider VV early in the design stage when developing requirement specifications for the product. For example, adding test points on circuit boards, having accessible connectors, providing data storage/retrieval capabilities, and making products modular can enhance the ability to test a product, which saves time and money. VV costs can also be reduced if previously tested materials or coatings are used for the product. Clarity, conciseness, measurability, appropriate tolerances, accuracy, and testability can all impact the final design and overall manufacturability. These specifications also provide the acceptance criteria for later VV activities.Q. Where do you see VV going in the next few years?VV activity in medical devices does not change quickly because the regulatory environment does not lend itself to quick changes. Strategies to improve outcomes and efficiencies will continue to evolve. Improved VV methods, automated testing tools, and documentation tools will undoubtedly become available as the regulatory climate continues to evolve.Mark Crawford is an independent writer.Learn more at ASMEs Verificati on and Validation Symposium. Heres how to feel amazing before 8 a.m.

Here's how to feel amazing before 8 a.m. Here's how to feel amazing before 8 a.m. In the first 60-120 minutes of your day, you can change your entire life. You can routinely get yourself into a “peak” or heightened state of mind and then operate from that state for the remainder of your day. It’s strange, though, that most people won’t do this. Most people are content pulling themselves out of bed and then dragging themselves through their day. Most people begin with negative momentum and continue with negative momentum. Most people’s days are highly reflective of their past. As people age, they become increasing past-oriented. Children are almost entirely future-oriented. If you ask them their age, they will say, “I’m almost 6!” or “I’m 5 and 3/4!”.At some point or another, you probably became past-oriented. You may have goals you’re pursuing. But if you look at your actual daily behavior, does it mostly look like what happened yesterday? If so, then you’re past-oriented.If asked the question, “Why are you doing what you’re doing?” w hen speaking of your job and other activities, is your response based on experiences and events of the past, or desires for your future? Most people are doing what they are doing because of an event in the past. Most people’s lives are highly predictable - because they are living from the past. Their body and environment have become the controlling influences in their lives. Their body is the record of their past, which has become used to experiencing the same emotions every day. Stepping out of those emotions - their comfort zone - isn’t fun and so it happens rarely. And their environment keeps them in check and holds their self-image together. If you want to change your life, you can do it very quickly. You can put yourself into a peak mental state every single morning and then operate from that state of mind throughout your day.You can create a wildly imaginative future and strive for that future with joy. As Neville Goddard put it, “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled. ”That’s what living in a peak-state is all about. It’s about having the imagination and possibility of a child and then creating the emotional experience of actualizing that future in the here-and-now.Art by GapingvoidTraining your brain to get what you wantAs you act from the future of your deepest desires, your behaviors change dramatically. You act with gusto, enthusiasm, and interest. You see potential where others see nothing. As Dan Sullivan has said, “Our eyes only see and our ears only hear what our brain is looking for.” Similarly, Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer said, “If something is presented as an accepted truth, alternative ways of thinking do not even come up for consideration.”These two quotes encompass the psychological concept - “Selective Attention” - which means we only pay attention to things from our environment that are meaningful to us or that we are looking for. We selectively attend, and the rest of everything in the field outside of us goes unnoticed.Every morning, you can put yourself into a zone where you see incredible opportunities and experiences. Your perspective comes from your emotional lens. How you feel about the world determines how you see it.When you act from your desired future - you see things you couldn’t see before. You act far more powerfully. You also begin acting with the foreknowledge (i.e., pre-cognition) that when you act powerfully, positive emotions will ensue. The following list is a simple way to put yourself into a peak-state every single day. This isn’t complicated stuff. It’s actually very basic and doable. But as Jim Rohn put it, “What is easy to do is easy not to do.”Here’s how it works: Set yourself up for success the night before (30-60 minutes) Sleep 7+ hours Wake up immediately when you said you would Get into a new environment (5-10 minutes) Meditation and prayer with emotion and writing (5-10 minutes) Listen to high-quality information while you exercise (20-40 minutes) Eat brain food (3-5 minutes) Work on a creative project while in a peak-state (30-90 minutes) This list may seem lame to you.You may be one of those people who feel you are above something like this. And that’s fine if you are. But without fail, every time I purposefully create a solid morning routine, I feel better.Dr. Jerome Bruner, a Harvard psychologist said, “You’re more likely to act yourself into feeling than feeling yourself into action.”With this morning routine, you actually enhance your emotional-state from two angles. You act intentionally and powerfully, which immediately shifts your emotional state as Dr. Bruner says. But you also take the time to visualize and emotionally generate your desired future in the here as now, as Neville Goddard says. You act your way into feeling powerful. And you also feel your way into action. You then operate the rest of your day from your future, not your past.Set yourself up for success the night before“Stressful activities have no place before bedtime. They can induce your body to secrete the stress hormone cortisol, wh ich can make you feel more alert. Chill out and steer clear of anything non-chilled out.” - Kimberly SnyderThis is very simple. Don’t look at screens 60+ minutes before bed Put your phone on airplane mode Allow yourself to “psychologically detach” from work - which means you stop thinking about it Be present with your loved ones “Wherever you are, make sure you are there.”  - Dan Sullivan Only 16% of creative ideas happen while you’re working - most of them will come when your mind is in a relaxed state Create an environment where sleep can happen Sleep 7+ hours“Treat yourself as well as you treat your smartphone, making sure to sleep until fully recharged.” - Arianna HuffingtonAccording to research done by The National Sleep Foundation, getting a healthy amount of sleep is linked to: increased memory; longer life; decreased inflammation; increased creativity; increased attention and focus; decreased fat and increased muscle mass with exercise; lower stress; decreased dependence on stimulants like caffeine; decreased risk of getting into accidents; decreased risk of depression If you sleep well and treat your body right, you won’t need caffeine and other stimulants. We live in an addiction culture. In the Ted Talk, “Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong,” Johann Hari explains that addiction is an “environmental adaptation.”Research has shown that caffeine use is due, in large part, to the industrial model of working from 9-5. It’s also clearly due to people’s poor sleeping and technology habits.Don’t start your day with caffeine. Instead, follow the advice of the people who consistently live the longest. In the book The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, Dan Buettner explains that people who live to be over 100 usually start their day with a purpose. They rarely rely on stimulants to get through their day. They are intentional. They are focused on longevity and purpose, not on quick-fixes like caffeine.Wake up immediately when you said you would“Self-trust is the first secret o f success.” - Ralph Waldo EmersonConfidence is a byproduct of doing what you say you will do. If you don’t trust yourself, you can’t have confidence.Confidence is something that has to be earned every single day. The first decision you make, the one to wake up, starts your momentum in either a positive or negative direction.Get into a new environment“If we do not create and control our environment, our environment creates and controls us.” - Dr. Marshall GoldsmithEvery environment has energy. In order to get yourself moving and going, get yourself into a fresh environment. Even if that’s just outside.Shifting environments shifts your energy. When you get up and immediately change your environment, you actually boost your energy levels. Research done by Ellen Langer has found that by simply changing context, people’s energy levels increase because the brain loves novelty and newness.Meditation and prayer with emotion and writing“Assume the feeling of the wish fulfil led.” - Neville GoddardAlso, when you begin to meditate, visualize, and write about your goals, you want to be in an environment conducive to getting clarity and insights. In order to live from your desired future, you want to think about it while your mind is creative first thing in the morning. A creative mind is essential to being a creator of your future and life.Imagination is highly linked to learning, joy, and creativity. How imaginative are you?How imaginative is the future you’re striving for?Is it “realistic”?Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”Dr. Stephen Covey said, “Live out of your imagination, not your history.”Here’s where you’re at so far: You set yourself up for success the night before You woke up when you said you would (which boosts confidence) You shifted your environment (which boosts energy and flow) You’re now imagining the future you want in a creative environment As Neville Goddard explains, “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.”As your visualizing and writing down your goals, do so with feeling. Assume the feeling of having achieved your dreams. Assume what it would be like to have what you want.Realize that the moment you begin feeling different, then you can create a different future than you did your past. Most people feel the same way today as they felt yesterday. And their body seeks desperately to recreate the same emotional state - which has become your homeostasis. In order to become a new person and create a new future - you need to act in ways that produce new emotions, and strategically generate the emotions you seek to feel.Write down your goals and a deadline in which they will be complete. Write down the price that needs to be paid in order to achieve the goal. Commit to acting and being such that you will pay the price. As the billionaire H.L. Hunt said:“There are only three requirements for success. First, decide e xactly what it is you want in life. Second, determine the price that you are going to have to pay to get the things you want. And third, and this is most important, resolve to pay that price.”Listen to high-quality information while you exercise.“Your input determines your outlook. Your outlook determines your output, and your output determines your future.” - Zig ZiglarWorkout in the morning, whether that means walking or going to the gym. Whatever you want. But grab yourself a pair of cordless headphones - you can find some for as little as $20.Workout while you listen to audiobooks or podcasts or inspirational music. By moving and pushing your body, you’ll also be lighting-up your brain. In the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, John Ratey and Eric Hagerman show that fitness charges your brain up and gets you into a learning and heightened state.Eat brain food“It is easier to change a man’s religion than to change his diet.” ? Ma rgaret MeadThe food you put into your body directly influences how well your brain, body, mind, and emotions work. Eat foods that light your brain up and get you energized to think and work.According to Dr. Axe, the follow is a list of some of the best brain foods in the morning: Nuts and seeds - higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline as you get older. Avocados - a monounsaturated fat, which contributes to healthy blood flow, which means a healthy brain. Avocados also lower blood pressure, and as hypertension is a risk factor for the decline in cognitive abilities, a lower blood pressure should promote brain health. Beets - they reduce inflammation, are high in cancer-protecting antioxidants and help rid your blood of toxins. The natural nitrates in beets actually boost blood flow to the brain, helping with mental performance. Blueberries - it’s one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods in the world, including vitamin C and vitamin K and fiber. Because of their high levels of gallic acid, blueberries are especially good at protecting our brains from degeneration and stress. Bone Broth - the ultimate food for healing your gut and, in turn, healing your brain. Its high levels of collagen help reduce intestinal inflammation, and healing amino acids like proline and glycine keep your immune system functioning properly and help improve memory. Coconut Oil - works as a natural anti-inflammatory, suppressing cells responsible for inflammation. It can help with memory loss as you age and destroy bad bacteria that hangs out in your gut. Egg Yolks - contain large amounts of choline, which helps in fetal brain development for pregnant women. It also breaks down bethane, a chemical that produces hormones related to happiness. Turmeric - helps boost antioxidant levels and keep your immune system healthy, while also improving your brain’s oxygen intake, keeping you alert and able to process information. Work on a creative project while in a peak state“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” - Mark TwainCrush the day while everyone else is in a daze.If you want to become successful, you must create success.Wealth is not something you earn, it’s something you create. And you can create success every single day. You can get into a creative state and produce incredible works. You can build companies. Write music. Come up with creative solutions. You can be a highly creative, imaginative, and innovative person. But creativity is a verb. It’s like love. It’s something you do and embody. So do it.Get your most important stuff done first. Or else, as you’ve seen before, it likely won’t get done.ConclusionArt by GapingvoidWant to live in a peak state? How to Check out a Commercial Landlord

How to Check out a Commercial Landlord How to Check out a Commercial Landlord Landlords run background checks on potential tenants and ask for references. Most commercial landlords ask for personal financial information in addition to information about your business. Because landlords hold the key (literally) to commercial rental properties it is easy to lose sight of the fact that you are really the one in control. You do not have to sign a lease and a high-pressured attempt to get you to sign a lease on the spot is a good sign you need to walk away. A ?desperate landlord may not have the resources to maintain the property, or not care about the quality of their tenants. A good landlord will look for tenants who will add value to the property by bringing in the right type of business good for other tenants and the surrounding community. Commercial leases are often longer than housing leases, and landlord often ask tenants to sign a three to five-year lease or trick them into a Triple Net Lease. Before you submit an application, it is important that you do your own homework and check up on a potential landlord. A nightmare landlord can ruin business for you in even the best of locations. Consider Talking With A Business Mentor If you are new to business, or planning to sign a lease for more than one year, you might want to talk to a business counselor or mentor to get ideas about finding the right location for your business. There are many services that offer free or low-cost business mentoring to help you make business decisions. A wonderful, free service to try is www.micromentor.org. You fill out a questionnaire and are offered a selection of mentors that match your criteria. Another great resource for established business owners and start-ups is SCORE, a government-sponsored program with local chapters throughout the United States. SCORE offers free information, resources, tools, and low-cost (or free, depending upon your location) seminars to help you start and grow your business successfully. Check Out A Landlords Reputation Contact your local chamber of commerce and ask questions about how well other business owners are doing in the area and if they offer programs to help promote new businesses. Casually mention to property and property owner you are considering and ask if the chamber representative can offer you any insights. If there are local business meetings you can ?attend or a network to join, do so, and ask other business owners if they are familiar with the landlord or management company. Check out the company who owns the building with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are complaints against the owners. However, be sure you check out the company who actually manages the property. Building owners often hire a management company to collect rents, manage and maintain the property, and handle all tenant issues. A landlord will probably charge you an application fee. That fee is used to cover the expense of checking out public data available about you and your business including credit scores and to see if you have a criminal record. There are many low-cost services online you can use to run the same check on your landlord. Pay Attention- And Bring a Friend Take a friend, business partner, or family member with you when you tour a property. Having a second pair of eyes is important because they may see something you miss in your excitement. If you see a lot of for lease signs it could be the weak economy- but it could also be the signs of a landlord that does not pay attention to the property and other tenants have left for non-economic reasons. Interview Existing Tenants Before signing a lease  or a sublease, you should talk to other tenants in the same building or location that you are considering and ask questions about the landlord. A property might be in a great location, but if you have a bad landlord it could hurt your business. Questions to ask other tenants include: Does the landlord fix things quickly?Does the landlord return calls within one day?Has the landlord tried to increase your rent or charge special fees for taxes, roof work, or other improvements? Is the landlord professional and polite to tenants and their customers? As you tour the property and talk with other tenants be observant: What are the other tenants like? Are they quiet or noisy?Do they take parking spaces from other tenants? Are they rude to other tenants customers? Checking Up on Landlords and Business Tenants You can also use search engines to check up on your landlord by searching the property name, the landlords name, and the names of other businesses. Search on their names plus the words reviews and complaints. By checking out complaints other tenants nearby you may be able to see if customers have complained about poor lighting, parking problems, bad security, etc.

Survey Over half of workers over 60 are postponing retirement

Survey Over half of workers over 60 are postponing retirement Survey Over half of workers over 60 are postponing retirement There are many good reasons to keep working after retirement, but some Americans are having trouble getting to that stage of life.  New CareerBuilder research shows that 53% of people ages 60 and up report that “they are postponing retirement” -  40% think they’ll have to wait to retire until at least age 70 - and 24% of workers say they don’t know how much money they’ll need to put away for their Golden Years.Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer at CareerBuilder, commented on the  decision for some to keep on working: “Postponing retirement will make an impact across all of our country’s workforce, along with retirement policy and financial and healthcare planning.”“With workers staying in their jobs longer, employers are adjusting hiring needs,” she added, “but also reaping the benefits of the extra skills and mentoring abilities of mature employees.”The Harris Poll surveyed 809 American adult workers working full-time, and who weren’t “self -employed” or working for the government. Here are some of the points that stood out.More people are saving up for retirement in the Northeast than anywhere elseThe research also broke the findings down by region, with the Northeast leading in terms of how many people (73%) are putting money in their retirement accounts. The South had the lowest amount of savers at 67%. Sixty-nine percent are saving in the Midwest and 71% are saving in the West. While 31% of women and 17% of men say they don’t know how much money to save for retirement, the numbers also show how many older people aren’t prepared for their Golden Years: 23% of workers age 55 and older don’t have a retirement plan, such as an IRA or 401(k).Here’s how much money people think they’ll need to reach their Golden YearsThe survey shows that when asked how much they will need for retirement, the most popular answer was “$500,000 to less than $1 million” at 31%, followed by “less than $500,000” came in seco nd place at 20%. The option of “$1 million to less than $2 million” claimed third place at 14%, then “$3 million or more” at 7%, followed by “$2 million to less than $3 million” at 5%.No matter how much money you think you need to save for retirement, it’s better to put some money away than none at all. CareerBuilder found that a whopping 40% of those ages 18 to 34 don’t have a retirement plan.Earlier research found that in 2017, many millennials doled out more cash for coffee than they’d saved for retirement - but that definitely doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

Common Characteristics of the Traditionalists Generation

Common Characteristics of the Traditionalists Generation Common Characteristics of the Traditionalists Generation Traditionalists are known as the silent generation because children of this era were expected to be seen and not heard. Theyre those who were born between 1927 and 1946, and they average in age from 75 to 80 years old in 2018. Most of them have retired from the workforce, and those who remain can be expected to work fewer hours.   Characteristics of Silent Generation Professionals Traditionalists are generally partners, managers, and senior support staff in the legal workplace, although some might sign on as part-time administrative staff just to keep busy after retirement. Silent generation attorneys often serve of counsel  to law firms. Theyve technically retired, but they maintain a close relationship with the firm and they can be called upon for their expertise on a case-by-case basis. The Silent Generation Is Hardworking   The silent generation brought the strong work ethic of their parents into the factories of industrialized society. They grew up during lean times, including the Great Depression and World War II. They consider work a privilege and it shows- theyre considered the wealthiest generation. Traditionalists believe that you earn your own way through hard work. Long, grueling hours in their prime enabled them to get ahead in their legal careers,  and they think others should do the same. This generation believes that promotions and advancement should be the result of tenure and proven productivity. They distrust flash-in-the-pan successes.   They Have Willpower Adversity doesnt daunt the silent generation. They tend to be dogged and determined, willing to go the distance even if they have to dig deep for the strength to do so. Again, they survived the Great Depression. Many of them had to toughen up and bear down to earn a living in those days to simply survive. They were often forced to take jobs that didnt necessarily appeal to them. They took what work was available...if and when it was available, and they were grateful for it. You wont find a traditionalist stomping off in a huff and quitting to grab the next available job that comes along. Traditionalists Are Loyal Employees   Traditionalists are civic-minded and loyal to their country and to their employers. In fact, they still register as the largest voting population in the U.S. Unlike Generation Y and Generation X  workers,  many traditionalists have stayed with the same employer throughout their entire working lives. Theyre less likely to change jobs to advance their careers than younger generations, but they expect the same loyalty in return. They Respect Authority   Raised in a paternalistic environment, the silent generation was taught to respect authority. Conformity and conservatism are prized. They tend to be good team players. They generally don’t ruffle feathers or initiate conflict in the workplace, and they like to feel needed.   Waste Not, Want Not Traditionalists tend to be thrifty. These are not folks who are going to trade their cars in every few years. Theyll diligently maintain what they own to extend the propertys lifespan. Of course, this can become annoying in the workforce, particularly for Millennials who arent inclined to dry out a sheet of paper towel for reuse later. The Silent Generation Can Be Tech-Challenged Dont expect your silent generation employee to be a whiz at operating his new smartphone.  Of all the generations  active in todays workplaces, traditionalists are the slowest to change their work habits and to adapt to new, more efficient ways of doing things. This is particularly the case when those efficient ways involve technology. Traditionalists might struggle to learn new technology as it evolves and changes the practice of law, and they  might try your younger staffs patience with the need for ongoing instruction in this area.   The flip side is that they often have great one-on-one interpersonal skills because theyre more accustomed to dealing with people eye-to-eye. Theyve honed their abilities to use this to their advantages.   Theyre Traditional Traditionalists value old-time morals, safety, security, and consistency. They have more respect for brick-and-mortar educational institutions and traditional lecture formats than online, web-based education and training. This generation favors conventional business models in the legal workplace and a top-down chain of command. Work ethic and reliability are important to them.

The biggest advantage of an incorporation is limited liability for shareholders. Under law, a corporation is considered to be a legal person that is distinct from the shareholders who own it. This means that individual shareholders are not personally liable for the debts and obligations of the corporation. 3 ways to master the art of persuasion

3 ways to master the art of persuasion 3 ways to master the art of persuasion Learn how to persuade coworkers to your way of thinking.Little is accomplished alone. To achieve complex goals, we often must rely upon the hard work and cooperation from those around us.Therefore, our ability to be persuasive will either further our capacity to lead a successful, lucrative career, or it will greatly hinder our odds of achieving our full potential.By learning how to get others to say “yes,” we can flourish in nearly any capacity of our professional lives.Below, you’ll find three crucial tips that will aid you in your quest to win others over and get behind your way of thinking.Stop expecting people to care about your needs. The most important lesson in persuasion is that you can’t expect others to care about what you want. If you desire to become more persuasive, get in the habit of addressing the concerns of others. When possible, avoid using the word “I,” and begin substituting the word “you” in its place. Doing so will naturally guide you to talk in terms of the others’ ambitions.By focusing on others’ needs, we are more apt to gain compliance and avoid resentment. For instance, a sales professional who wants to sell a new product to a customer is less likely to persuade by bragging about how technically innovative the product she’s selling is.Rather, it’s in her best interest to clearly define how the benefits of the product can assist the organization in cutting production costs and complexities. Ironically, the most effective way to get what you want is to be less concerned with your own needs and more in tune with the desires of others. Then, have faith that once you address the other party’s concerns, your concerns are going to be met.Appreciate conflicting opinions rather than judging them Upon running into a disagreement, most people rush to judge others’ points of view and attempt to persuade through contradiction. As many have seen from experience, this has the opposite of the desired effect. Cooperation in conversation is achieved when you show that you consider the other person’s ideas and feelings as important as your own.Instead of condemning the other party, it’s more effective to try to understand the reasoning behind their actions.Once you decipher a person’s motives, you can adequately show respect for their beliefs. And, upon doing so, have them listen to your point of view in a more open-minded manner. Most disputes are never settled because each party fails to show sympathy for the others’ opinions.People are more likely to cooperate with you when they feel you respect their beliefs. Therefore, to gain agreement, it’s most effective to address that you recognize and appreciate the individual’s concerns. Once you show respect for their point of view, you can then begin to disarm and persuade that person to your way of thinking.Avoid criticism and embrace appreciation. One of the most effective ways to influence someone is simply to appreciate them. People do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than they do under criticism.By criticizing others, we dilute our ability to persuade. Disapproval puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself.Regardless of how mistaken someone may be, using condemnation as a motivator will often result in the other party detaching from your cause, or even doing the opposite of what is requested.Countless studies have shown that animals rewarded for positive behavior are much more apt to comply than those punished for bad behavior.People are no different. If you want to influence, show a sincere appreciation for the other individual and remember to avoid insincere flattery at all costs. In the endRemember that there is a difference between influencing someone and manipulating them. If you find yourself persuading an individual to behave in a manner that is less than mutually beneficial, you are in breach of ethics and leaving yourself open to a surprising ly negative outcome.
